SFAIK the Maoris just finished colonising the islands themselves- some 50 years passed between their conquest of NZ and the arrival of the Brits. Not much is known about the previous inhabitants.

Maori dominated but in the years prior to the Treaty of Waitangi there were many abuses by Whalers, Sealers, Traders, etc.  This was the main reason that the Maori agreed to sign the treaty giving them British protection.
