New Zealand Rugby Union’s chairman resigns
Chairman of New Zealand Rugby Union Jock Hobbs has resigned from his post today.
Hobbs was diagnosed earlier this year with leukaemia but after undergoing chemotherapy, he was found to be suffering from a more serious non-Hodgkins lymphoma. This new disease required even more care and treatment that is why Hobbs, who could not handle
the union’s matter carefully, decided to quit from his job and announced retirement.
Hobbs started rugby from his school and made his international debut for All Blacks in 1983 against touring British and Irish lions. He played 21 test matches for his country and scored 16 points in his international career. All Blacks success rate was 76.19%
during his stay. He also captained All Blacks in 4 matches. In 2002, he joined New Zealand Rugby Union as chairman and served the union for 8 years until he retires today.
Chief executive officer of New Zealand Rugby Union Steve Tew, who was talking to media after Hobbs’ resign, wished Hobbs and his whole family all the best for his medical treatment and paid tribute to him and said his services are enormous
for union and he worked really hard for the development of rugby in New Zealand.
"Under Jock’s Chairmanship, the NZRU has enjoyed a period of sustained achievement on and off the field, while the game in New Zealand has also had to navigate a number of major challenges."
Furthermore, Tew said Hobbs’ tenure was the best time for the New Zealand Rugby Union and New Zealand rebuilt its international reputation and organized the Gran Slam series of Lions. Union also won the bid for the 2011 world cup and he also worked for domestic
rugby as well.
In the end Tew also thanked to Hobbs on the behalf of whole union and said, "Jock has been instrumental in many of these achievements and developments and the Board and indeed everyone associated with the NZRU are grateful for his commitment and service."
New Zealand Rugby Union has also announced new chairman straight after Hobbs’ resignation and Mike Eagle is named as the new chairman of the union.
Unquestionably, Hobbs’ services are great for New Zealand Rugby Union and they will definitely miss his services.
