New Zealand Under-19s v South Africa Under-19s – ICC Under-19 World Cup 2012 – (3rd Place Play-off) – Match Update
Bolstered by a 4-wicket haul from David Rhoda, followed by a fluent half-ton from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 Under-19s
by 8-wickets during their 3rd Place Play-off, at Endeavour Park in Townsville on August 25.
The New Zealand U-19s won the toss and elected to bat, but were unable to stand up in reply to the forceful South Africa U-19s attack. Led by Rhoda (9.5-1-26-4), with Jan Frylinck (5-1-18-2) and Calvin Savage (4-0-14-3) chipping in with supporting performances,
the South Africa U-19s tore through the New Zealand U-19 batting order, restricting them to 90, all out, by the 37th over.
The innings got off to a bad start for the New Zealand U-19s after Frylinck claimed two consecutive wickets – dismissing both Ben Horne (4) and skipper Will Young (0) in the second over. The partnership between http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MJ-Lumb-c1981 Carter (20) and Robert O'Donnell (13) proved
a little more lasting, yielding 28 runs, but the 11th over resulted in the loss of two more wickets – O'Donnell was caught out by wicketkeeper de Kock off Savage, who then went on to dismiss Cam Fletcher, lbw, on duck.
The start set the tone for the rest of the innings. In total, 5 batsmen were dismissed on duck, and only 4 batsmen managed to reach double-digit totals. Connor Neynens top-scored for the team with an unbeaten 21, and by the 37th over, the New
Zealand U-19s were all out, posting a paltry total of 90.
Following the utter annihilation of the opposition’s batting line-up, the South Africa U-19s proceeded to speed through the chase, taking less than 15 overs to reach 94.
De Kock set the tone for the innings at the top of the order, contributing 50 off 43 deliveries, and was joined by fellow opener, skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Chad-Bowes-c49511 (12), for a 48-run stand. Both openers were dismissed by the 13th over, but Diego Rosier (9) and
Theunis de Bruyn (19 off 9, including 4 boundaries) saw the team safely through the rest of the chase, reaching 94 at the expense of just 2 wickets, with 212 deliveries remaining.
