Pacer Anya Shrubsole’s five-wicket haul helped propel England to victory against New Zealand in the 1st T20I of the England Women tour of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Wellington-c864 today on February 17, 2012.
Prior to the commencement of the series, the England outfit had played 3 warm-up matches against a New Zealand Emerging Players Women team, and having won all three, went into today’s game with high spirits.
After winning the toss, English skipper, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Charlotte-Marie-Edwards-c50507 elected to field, leaving it up to the hosts to set them a target.
The Kiwis innings got off to a bad start, with the top order failing to impress. Opener http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Suzannah-Wilson-Bates-c92079 (sister of the NZ men’s team player, Michael Bates), who contributed 10 runs,
and left with score at 19.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Amy-Ella-Satterthwaite-c44145 (8) and Liz Perry (4), off
the pitch with apparent ease. Laura Marsh took a single wicket, taking http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Frances-c57085 Mackay out on a duck.
The Black Caps’ innings was steadied, somewhat, by the partnership of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Christopher-Alroy-Martin-c50714 was bowled out by Shrubsole.
Hazell and Shrubsole refused to let the opponents get too comfortable on the pitch, and struck again in the death overs, with the pacer snapping up http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Lea-Marie-Maureen-Tahuhu-c72373 at 3.
NZ’s Broadmore and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sian-Elizabeth-Ansley-Ruck-c90176 remained not out at the end of 20 overs, as the host team’s score was restricted to a meagre 80, mainly due to the English side’s outstanding bowling effort.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 stepped up to the crease to chase 81, and made light work of it, reaching the target with 14 balls to spare.

The innings reached a precarious point in the 10th over, when http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Tamsin-Tilley-Beaumont-c92692
(17), and both remained not out, bringing the score up to 81 in 17.4 overs, at the cost of 4 wickets.
Medium pacer, Ruck, remained New Zealand’s most prominent bowler, claiming two wickets, while Broadmore and Tahuhu earned a scalp each.
Predictably, Shrubsole won the Player of the Match award, after taking 5 scalps at the cost of 11 runs, with an exceptional economy rate of 2.75.
"I'm delighted with my figures and performance; it's definitely a day I will remember,” she said. “I'm really excited about the rest of the series."
The next T20I between the two teams is scheduled for February 19, at Seddon Park, Hamilton.
