New Zealand all-rounder cricketer Scott Styris resigns with Essex for next season’s Twenty20
Pending approval by the New Zealand Cricket board, Scott Styris has signed on again with Essex for the 2011 Twenty20 series.
Styris has a long track record with Essex. In last season’s semi-finals the 35-year-old right-arm pace bowler made 392 runs in 13 innings, striking 23 fours and 24 sixes to average 35.63. He took 13 wickets at 31.38 in 15 matches.
Styris is a common face to New Zealand cricket, having spent time playing for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Northern-Districts-c825 locally; team-mates say the veteran player is a welcome addition to the Twenty20.
"He has shown good form for New Zealand and has the experience of the World Cup to offer. We hope he will make a big impact on the side,” former coach Paul Grayson told reporters. "As a committed cricketer he knows how to play the game and is a canny one-day
player, he could well prove to be a very astute signing for Essex."
The cricketer lent a hand in the Essex knock against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Surrey-c851 in June, hitting 49 balls and approaching 106. He was instrumental in getting Essex into the knockout level however he was not allowed to continue at the time because of other obligations.
After the world cup Styles sustained injuries that prevented him from contributing as he was not able to keep up his form without enough practice or field work. He was later a part of the 2007 Test series with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 but was subsequently retired from
the squad.
Making a comeback this year, Styris was selected for the Tri-series in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 over the summer, where he made 88 runs in the first OID, taking the wicket from Kumar Sangakkara.
After the series he sustained a back stress fracture while training and was again unable to play, missing out on the Test against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Hong-Kong-c2919 Cricket Sixes and is set for
a comeback with renewed http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Essex-c783 contract.
