  1. The name "kiwi" for us NZers derives from Kiwi - a flightless bird native to NZ & an endangered species. They are nocturnal & forage on forerst floors for worms, grubs etc. As a comparison people in US are known to us as Yanks - but we don't have any food called Yank.

The term Kiwifruit is for a fruit grown on vines & previously known as Chinese Gooseberries. The modern name is Zespri. The fruit is a huge part of our agricultural exports.

    The term Kiwi is also

    1. a colloquial term for the people of New Zealand.

    2. the name of the New Zealand national rugby league team.

    3. a New Zealand racehorse, winner of 1983 Melbourne Cup

  3. Kiwis normally cop a lot of jokes regarding their affinity with sheep from Aussies, because they are a little bit better at playing Rugby, as much as I hate to admit it, Bloody kiwis, lol.
