http://www.senore.com/Cricket/BB-McCullum-c1129 as team captain – Cricket News Update
Brendon McCullum has replaced http://www.senore.com/Cricket/LRPL-Taylor-c1849 as New Zealand’s captain in all three formats of the game following the latter’s decision to decline the opportunity to lead the Test side only.
Taylor has further opted out of the team’s upcoming tour of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013.
It had been reported that the relationship between Taylor and Mike Hesson had reached breaking point during the recently concluded series against Sri Lanka, where the Kiwis managed to conjure up their first Test win in seven attempts after being swept away by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 respectively.
The team largely had a poor year, where their only series triumph came against the lowly ranked http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Zimbabwe-c3045 in January 2012. They then suffered a convincing defeat at the hands of South Africa (across all formats), and further failed to make the knock-out stage of the World T20.
David White, the New Zealand Cricket CEO, had earlier said that the speculation was not ideal but a conclusive call will be made after he returns from an http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 meeting in Dubai. On returning, he announced that McCullum will take over the arm band in all formats following Taylor’s refusal to lead the Test side.
"http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mike-J-Hesson-c76286 proposed a split captaincy that was endorsed by me as CEO and agreed by the board," White said. "The original recommendation was for Ross Taylor to be retained as Test captain and Brendon McCullum to be short-form captain. We regret that Ross Taylor has declined the opportunity, therefore Brendon McCullum has been appointed as Black Caps captain for all three forms of the game.
"I met with Ross ... for about three hours yesterday and we considered a number of different options. One of them was ... for him to go to South Africa and even just play the Test matches if he wanted to do that. But he thought about it long and hard and he said that he would like a break and to spend time with his family. It's not ideal and we would be a stronger team with Ross http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Taylor-c92915 in it."
Taylor was elevated to the post after the World Cup 2011, and though the team failed to progress as a unit, his own performances stood out. He scored three Test centuries during that period, including the most recent 142 against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758.
McCullum, who has previously led the side in 8 ODIs and 12 T20s, was the unanimous choice and will now become the country’s 28th Test captain.
