New Zealand cricket chief Justin Vaughn has backed the Kiwi captain Daniel Vettori to play ICC World Cup 2015.
Vettori has been struggling with his fitness since 2010 and announced his retirement from Twenty20 cricket after the recently concluded ICC World Cup 2011.
The left-arm spinner stepped down as the Test captain after the series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 earlier in 2011 and is not likely to captain the Black Caps in any format of the game in future. He is without doubt the best spinner in the Kiwi ranks and the New Zealand
cricket officials want Vettori to play for as long as possible as a senior player of the side.
Vaughn is impressed by the farewell Sachin Tendulkar received after the final of the ICC World Cup 2011 at http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mumbai-c820 and wants to give the same kind of a send-off to the best spin bowler New Zealand has ever produced.
The Kiwi cricket chief said, “It may be a long shot but it would be great to give him the farewell that [Sachin] Tendulkar got the other night. Dan will only just be 36 so if we manage his workload over the next two years it might be a possibility.”
Vettori might not be a cricketer of Tendulkar’s stature but he has served his country well in the last decade. He is just 32 years of age and it is very likely that he can play for another four years.
Vaughn has said that he will try his level best to convince Vettori to play for as long as possible and will sit with the left-arm spinner to devise a plan which can prolong his career.
“I'll chat to him about that, but it might be the right time to make a clean break and leave Dan to be a senior player and not worry about all the other responsibilities,” Vaughn added.
Apart from one of the best left-arm spinners in the world, Vettori is more than useful with the bat as he has 6 Test match hundreds under his belt. He has been one of the very few high-class cricketers produced by New Zealand in the last ten years and it
is in the best interest of New Zealand cricket that he passes on his experience to the younger cricketers while playing with them.
