New Zealand’s flamboyant all-rounder Jesse Ryder is in trouble again after behaving indecently under the influence of alcohol during an ongoing indoor cricket tournament.
The left-handed batsman, who has a reputation of striking the cricket ball long and hard, has had several warnings over his indiscipline in the recent past, and his latest escapades are set to make life difficult for him when he returns to International cricket after recovering from an elbow injury.
"I accept that being intoxicated and rowdy during the night put me in a position where I put New Zealand Cricket and my own reputation at risk and I accept this is not tolerable," Ryder told New Zealand Cricket, as he apologized for his behaviour, which he accepted was unbecoming of an International cricket star and leading sportsman of his country.
The batsman was forced to apologize to the management of the hotel where he was staying, when some other guests placed there complained that he was very loud.
Ryder, who also bowls useful medium-pacers, was lodged in the hotel with an indoor cricket team.
"I have put a lot of time into working out a plan to prevent me being in this position again," he said. "I am committed to making the right changes in my life as I really want a long career as a professional cricket player. I've had enough of getting into this sort of trouble and bringing attention to myself."
Ryder’s track record has already been dicey, and he has received numerous warnings over his indiscretions in recent years.
The all rounder was in serious trouble when he put his right hand through a glass window (reportedly trying to break into a toilet) in a drunken state at a Christchurch bar two years ago.
After that incident, he had vowed to give up on alcohol after another breach earlier in the year, yet it seems that he did not really learn his lesson to the disappointment of New Zealand Cricket Board and Players’ Association.
"I know the changes I am making do not dismiss the misconduct issue, however I am fully committed to [New Zealand] and I am committed to doing what is necessary to be the best I can be," he added, with the hope of getting through his recent skirmish without a heavy fine, or worse still, a ban.
However, it seems he won’t be left off that easy, as former New Zealand cricketer Geoff Allott, who is serving as NZC's general manger of cricket, said that the issue was being viewed as a matter of grave concern.
He added that the governing body of the game was greatly perturbed by Ryder’s actions and wanted to ensure that the cricketer learns his lesson one final time, or faces a serious punishment.
"NZC is extremely disappointed in this breach of trust and protocol by Jesse," he said. "We have seen some positive progress from Jesse in recent times, which make this incident even more disappointing.”
The all-rounder is touted as one of the most gifted strikers to have emerged from the country in recent years; he is considered a vital cog in the team in all formats of the game, especially the One-Day and Twenty20 varieties.
The 26-year old has represented his country in 11 Tests, 21 ODIs and 14 T20 matches; he has scored two Tests and one ODI hundred.
