We're not going to be backpacking overnight. We just want some 4 to 8 hour day hikes that would be beautiful and nice and any other advice you might have for the trip would be great. We're going to be there for 3 weeks.

  1. your best bet is to check out the New Zealand conservation websitehttp://doc.govt.nz/templates/ByRegionLan...

This link will take you directly to the tracks and walks section and there are lists of walks of varying lengths for every region in NZ.

I'd recommend Arthurs pass in the south island, heaps of day walks there, also you could even go to Mt cook there are several short and longer day walks there that will give you splendid views of our highest peak.

In the North island the tonagriro crossing would be a must! its a 17km walk which takes you through some magnificent volcanic secenery.

Definetly check out the DOC website link, it should really help you out

    Good luck :-)

  2. get a lonely planet guide & when you arrive here check out books you can buy on tramping (that's what we call hiking) in our bookstores like Whitcoulls or Borders.

  3. The Abel Tasman National Park is a MUST (as another user mentioned)

I've been there done that about 18 times.

    Don't pass it up!

You can even walk down one way and take a water taxi back, http://aquataxi.co.nz  this way you see the best of both worlds.  At the end of the track is Awaroa Lodge and Cafe - again a must see, beautiful place and awesome food! http://www.awaroalodge.co.nz

  4. If you are going to Nelson head out to Kaiteriteri . It's so beautiful around there and you can walk up the tracks of the Abel tasman National park. http://www.abeltasman.co.nz/

  5. North Island, Hawkes Bay side - Ruahine Ranges are unreal they are soooo beautiful especially at this time of year
