New Zealand permanent residency occupations list?

Question

I am a Japanese national wanting to migrate to New Zealand. I have 5 yrs bookkeeping experience in Australia, a Business Management Diploma plus an Advanced Diploma of Accounting.

Does anybody know if I can get a residency with this qualifications?

Also are there many Bookkeeping jobs in New Zealand?

Not sure for general book keeping as it isn't deemed a skill shortage, there are a few jobs out there for book keepers not a lot though. You need to qualify on points, that takes all sorts of things into account, eg where you choose to live (you lose points if you want to live in Auckland for example), not just your education. Have a look at the website below it is quite thorough.

you most likely will get residency here. Have a look at the NZ government web sites for criteria. I am British, moved here 4 and a bit yrs ago, its a good country, like anywhere its got its pitfalls but in general its not a bad spot!!

There is a point system for skilled migrants - you must first fill out an "Expression of Interest" form online and submit it with your $400 (USD) application fee via credit card. The user above provided you with the links to more info on this process. If you score 140 or over you are in the "Yes" pile automatically and they select every "fortnight" aka every two weeks. They will select you to apply for legal working status with a Visa or permanent residence. It seems like around 30% of those with "higher" points values get selected to apply.

From what I understand you may or may not be given an agent and have to do a bunch of health tests and background checks and then resubmit a larger, more formal application. This includes employment verification, police reports and a chest x-ray.

I think it takes from 8-10 months in total.

There are a lot of companies who may help you achieve residency, and plenty of bookkeeping jobs around.  I would first try and get a work permit, as residency will be easier to obtain if you are in paid employment.  Your quals will be fine and suitable to most employers in a book-keeping/junior accountancy type role.  A company who I know currently has a vacancy is Brown and Pennell, in Te Awamutu.  The agricultural industry attracts a lot of points due to a huge labour shortage - Brown and Pennell do a lot of agricultural accounting, not sure if that would help.  Auckland would be an easy place to get a job.

You may have to train to the NZ qualifications standard to do book keeping in NZ.  It would be worth finding out, and perhaps you could do a course through correspondence before coming to NZ.

Accounting is on the NZ skilled shortage lists.  Look more into the list to see what you would come under.
