New Zealand sailing team’s overall run at the 2011 Perth ISAF Sailing World Championship
At the conclusion of the Perth International Sailing Federation (ISAF) Sailing World Championship 2011 that finished after providing some exciting and thrilling moments, New Zealand sailing team could not produce any outstanding results. The Kiwi sailing
squad grabbed only three medals, one silver and two bronze, in the 49er, Laser and 470 Women classes.
The Kiwi squad faced some ups and downs during the championship. Weather conditions also played their part shuffling the score boards, which affected the final results. Due to some heavy winds, a number of races could not commence and the organising committee
had to cancel them.
New Zealand’s sailing squad showed impressive performances in the concluding races of the 2011 Perth ISAF Sailing World Championships to claim their medals. The 49er silver medal was won by Peter Burling and Blair Tuke, while Andrew Murdoch will be returning
home with his bronze medal in Laser class. The final New Zealand team in the medal run of 470 Women classes was Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie, who also secured a bronze title.
Before commencing the final races on the last day of world championship, Peter Burling and Blair Tuke were on fourth position overall. The pair climbed up to the second podium finish after clinching a second position in the double point medal race and claimed
the silver medal.
In the Laser fleet, Andrew Murdoch faced the same situation. He started his final race with eighth position overall but an excellent sailing show from him dragged him straight up to the second spot. Despite the regular strong local winds, Murdoch managed
to make his way to the top.
Last in New Zealand’s medal run were Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie in the 470 Women fleet. The duo maintained their performance throughout the event and won third position in the overall standings at the final showdown of 2011 Perth ISAF Sailing World Championship
to hold the bronze medal.
In the top 10 standings of all race classes, Paul Snow-Hansen and Jason Saunders grabbed the eighth spot in 470 Men class, while JP Tobin and Tom Ashley of RS:X Men finished on fifth and sixth places, respectively. The team of Stephanie Hazard, Jenna Hansen
and Susannah Pyatt from match racing, and Sara Winther of Laser Radial were placed on ninth and 10th podium spots respectively, in their fleets.
Overall, the Kiwi squad had eight teams within the top ten standings of all classes at the end of 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships. The Kiwi sailing team has also qualified for the Olympic Games to sail in nine classes.
