England 167 & 234/1 (87.0 ov) v New Zealand 460/9d - England trail by 59 runs with 9 wickets remaining
With only a day left in the first Test match between hosts New Zealand and England, the Poms have seemingly saved themselves from an imminent defeat after getting bowled out for 167 runs in their first innings, as they ended the fourth day of play with 234
runs on the board for the loss of only one wicket and now trail by 59 runs at University Oval, Dunedin.
After ending the third day of play with 402 for seven, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Christopher-Alroy-Martin-c50714 on 17.
The batting duo continued their impressive form, as they bashed the English bowlers from the get go.
However, before they could cause any further damage, this partnership was broken by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SCJ-Broad-c2465, who took the wicket of McCullum after the batsman had clobbered an outstanding knock of 74 runs. By this time, New Zealand had managed to post 447 runs on the
board.
BP Martin was then joined by N Wagner as the hosts took the score to 460 before the demise of the former who perished after crafting an immaculate knock of 41 runs. This wicket was enough to convince the home team to declare the innings as they felt they
had enough runs on the board to humiliate England.
From the tourists, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/JM-Anderson-c1705 and Broad were the top performers with four and three wickets to their names.
Keeping their first innings debacle in front of them, England were certainly under pressure and could not afford the same outcome. While on the other side, New Zealand were counting on their bowlers to repeat the performance
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AN-Cook-c1026 and NRD Compton, however, had other plans as they forged a resounding partnership, giving their side a perfect start by piling 231 runs together. This partnership actually saved this match for England.
Cook was then removed by Boult after the left-handed batsman had scored 116 runs.
With NRD Compton unbeaten on 102 and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ST-Finn-c2566 waiting to open his account, England ended the day with a lot of pride.
