Opener, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RJ-Nicol-c2331, top scored with an untiring 146, while Jacob Oram’s elevation to No.3 saw the left-hander finally rediscovering his old form, striking the ball astoundingly to make 59 from 28 balls, as the tourists’ maintained their poor showings Down
Under.
The proceedings began on a much brighter note for the visitors, with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MJ-Guptill-c1980 to cut loose, following the initial slow period, with a barrage of boundaries
to the on-side, as the Kiwi opener picked up the scoring rate astutely to bring up a half-century – his fourth in as many games.
When Guptill finally departed on 77, the Kiwi’s were well positioned at 131 for 1. On came Oram to show a glimpse of his true talent, which somehow had been called in for scrutiny over the past two years. The left-hander showed no mercy to a deflated opponent,
clobbering 4 clean hits, for maximum, to motor along to a precious 50.
Amidst all this was Nicol, who had watched his partners demolish the Rhodesians, and kept his charge of making it to the triple digit marks. He held his own in an innings which saw him smash two towering sixes -sailing into the nearby Rugby stadium.
By that point, it was more a case of damage limitation for the bowling side, which had already dropped two easy catches and handed further lifelines to skipper, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/BB-McCullum-c1129 (20) and Tom Latham (48) after capturing the wicket of Oram.
The last five overs produced 86, which also saw the Rhodesians finally taking out Nicol as the opener walked out of the field to a resounding applause. His innings of 146 off 134 included 10 boundaries and six sixes of the highest quality.
The hosts set up a daunting 373 to chase and going by the recent form of their counterparts, it certainly remains a tall task.
