New Zealand’s Andrew Murdoch tops Laser fleet of 2011 Weymouth and Portland International Regatta
New Zealand sailing squad’s Andrew Murdoch finished on top of the Men’s Singlehanded Laser fleet of 2011 Weymouth and Portland International Regatta on Day 4 at the Weymouth Bay. The sailor was in
second place on Day 3 but a convincing performance on Day 4 brought him on top. In both races of the day, Murdoch clinched an eighth and a 12th place to top the standings.
Meanwhile, Kiwi sailor in RS:X Men’s fleet, Jon-Paul Tobin had mixed fortunes on the fourth day of the test event. He opened the day with a 21st place finish in the first race but sprang
back in the second to conclude on top of the race. However, he still holds the sixth spot in the overall standings of RS:X Men.
While speaking to the local media, Tobin said, “Thoroughly tested out the Nothe Course today, a very tactical and shifty course area in general, particularly tricky in the wind direction we raced
today. I opened with a 21st in race one - went swimming at the start as two wind lines converged, then back on track with a 1st in race two to be 6th overall. It’s tight at the top... the medal race will be a blast!”
In other fleets, seven of the nine New Zealand teams have made it to the Top 10 of the standings. Peter Burling and Blair Tuke are still at number three in 49er while Jon-Paul Tobin of RS:X Men is
currently occupying sixth spot. In the women’s teams, Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie have taken the eighth spot in 470 Women while Natalia Kosinska finished in 10th position in RS:X Women on Day Four.
