New Zealand’s Josh Junior beats David Gilmour to win 2012 Warren Jones International Youth Regatta
Despite finishing on a lower position after the group races, New Zealand’s Josh Junior managed to clinch the overall title at 2012 Warren Jones International Youth Regatta after beating hot favourite David Gilmour 3-1 on the final day of the regatta.
The 2012 Warren Jones International Youth Regatta, managed by Swan River Sailing, produced excellent sailing competitions at the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club during its time period. The final day of the regatta was carrying moderate winds for racing which
really proved handy during the final contest between Junior and Gilmour.
Before reaching the final against Gilmour, Junior faced David Chapman in the quarter-final clash and easily trashed him by the score line of 2-0. The Kiwi sailor made no mistake in both races of the quarters and nudged his opponent easily with two race wins.
His next opponent in the semi-finals was Australia’s Jordan Reece, who was considered to be one of the favourites to claim the regatta title. The Kiwi put up a superb sailing show against the Australian and defeated him in similar fashion to that of Chapman.
With two easy triumphs over the Aussie sailor, Junior surged into the final clash against Gilmour.
Junior cruised into a 1-0 lead in the very first moment of the final match as he clinched the first race. Gilmour pulled level at 1-1 after he won the second race easily. After that, back-to-back race wins secured Junior the win and he claimed the regatta
title.
The New Zealand skipper spoke to the media after his victory, “that’s what you have a good crew for, to tell you what to do, I had Matty Stevens talking me through it all the way. Towards the end we started to get it right.”
One strong factor in the completion of the outstanding regatta was ideal wind conditions. The breeze was blowing up to 15 knots on Aussie waters which contributed to the successful completion of the championship.
