New Zealand’s Laura Douglas decides to quit from International Hockey – Hockey News
Laura Douglas, the brilliant Black Stick player has decided to retire from international hockey.
However, the talented player will continue to represent her club, Chill Tech Old Girls in the future and is also looking to play for Northland in the next year’s National Hockey League.
Coach Hager stated that they will surely miss the brilliant player for her contribution to the sport and her country as well.

“I think Laura undervalued the contribution she made to the group, from a leadership point of view and also the experience she offered. She was a committed player who trained hard and she helped engrain a strong culture and work ethic in the team,” said Hager.
The talented Black Stick, Laura Douglas, has represented the national hockey team for six years where she participated in 41 international matches. However, she now felt that as she does not have much passion for the game and it is the right time to give
someone else a chance to represent the country at the highest level of sport as 2012 London Olympics are not far away.
“It is not the training or travel, because we will be centralising next year. If I was going to do it I would have to be 100% committed and for me I felt like I wasn’t being fair to the team, I don’t have the passion and I would prefer to be doing something
else,” Douglas stated about her retirement decision.
Currently Laura is providing her services to Kamo High School where she teaches the subjects of health and physical education to 9-12 grade students as she has completed her Psychology degree from the University of North Carolina along with her teaching
diploma.
Her decision to retire will definitely have an impact on the New Zealand’s Women’s hockey team, as Douglas provided leadership and a strong competitive spirit. It will be interesting to see what impact her retirement will have on the team, as the 2012 London
Olympics are getting close.
The Black Sticks will be looking to overcome the loss of such a talented and dominating player as they will be planning for the future.
