New blood taking charge – Is time for old golf giants to retire?
Generally a player starts off as an amateur, and improves to be called one of the best in the world. At that time, they reach their peak. After a few good years’ players start getting old and even the best start missing the cut in tournaments.
This is the time when one has an option, either they can retire or go against the odds and play it till their last breath.
Unlike football and basketball, golf is a game in which one gets better with time to a certain extent. However, some analysts believe that golfers once old, are of no good.
They disgrace their reputation and they should just retire once they have lost their game. There is no way they can win another major or ever a regular tournament.
This type of people believes that it is time for young players to rule the world of golf. They think that young blood is better than the old giants.
They are of the view that players like Rory McIlroy should be the new face of golf. Undoubtedly, he has achieved tremendous amount of trophies in very little time. He has already hit the number one in world golf ranking at such a young age.
On the contrary, he is also going through a rough patch. This year, he has not been able to perform as well as he has done in the past.
He has been missing the cut in many tournaments in the past two months. He is just 23 years old at the moment and already went from his peak to missing cut. So the question is should he also retire?
Of course not, he has at least 20 years of good golf still left in him. He has tremendous amount of time to bounce back. So the argument here is, people can still rise after their downfall.
These sorts of analyst are inclined with the thought that the old players who have hit a rough patch like Mark Wilson, Yang Ye, Darren Clarke and Daniel Chopra should retire.
They have gone through their peak and have successfully made a good name for themselves in the world of golf. They have played the best golf they could.
It is time to put down the clubs and retire for good. This way they will be remembered as legends. If they do not retire now, they would be just humiliated.
Not so long ago, Tiger Woods also a part of this list. He was continuously criticized as he was playing his life’s worst golf. He was advised many times to retire from professional golf. At the time he was going through divorce with his wife.
The pressure had greatly increased on him. All this led to lack of concentration on the course and he started playing bad golf.
Woods had achieved a great deal at that time. Still he did not retire. He took a little time off. Got his mind straight and again came into the game. After a short duration, he was able to bag another trophy.
Old giants maybe criticized on their game time and again. Nonetheless, they are the best the world has ever seen and can play good golf till they believe in their selves.
These young players may be more energetic and may have some new skill. However, on the contrary, they have no experience in the real field as compared to the old players.
