New circuit for Russian GP in final stages of construction – Formula 1 news
The new circuit being built for the 2014 Russian Grand Prix at Sochi has been reported to be in its final stages of construction by the organisers of the race.
“Many massive Olympic venues are already built, some sport facilities have been put in commission, while the motorsport venue is in the active phase of construction,” said the statement from the circuit operating company Formula Sochi. “Construction crews
are making good progress with the preparing of groundworks and laying of the asphalt coat. The first layer of pavement has been laid in some areas.”
German engineer and designer of various motorsports circuits including this one, Hermann Tilke, also expressed his satisfaction with the progress of the circuit’s construction.
“Together with [track builder] Omega and Formula Sochi we are deeply involved in the Russian Grand Prix project and we are glad that all works are going according to schedule considering the large amount of coordination necessary with the Olympic construction,”
he said.
There are four total number of designers recognised by the FIA but Tilke is the only one to be especially appointed for designing the F1 circuits.
The Russian GP has only been held twice until now in the years 1913 and 1914 at a circuit in St. Petersburg. The 1914 Grand Prix was won by a German driver, Willy Scholl, and then the event was abandoned following the First World War and Russian Civil war.
The event was not renewed after the establishment of the Soviet Union. The Russian GP is expected to take place over the Sochi circuit during the 2014 F1 season which will make the event taking place after 100 years of the last one.
The circuit is being named as the Sochi Olympic Park Circuit and is 3.7 miles long. It is the third longest circuit in F1 behind the Spa in Belgium and Silverstone in Great Britain.
F1boss, Bernie Ecclestone, has been busy in negotiations with various countries to add new races to the F1 calendar. Recently in 2012, the United States GP was renewed after five years on a new purpose built track which received good audience
