I have had my grey cockatiel for 3 weeks, she/he is only 17 weeks old because of the age of the bird the pet shop could not confirm the gender. We have taught it to wolf whistle and do a baseball tune plus the beginning to a song. Is it normal to mimic so quickly? Could this mean she could be a he?

  1. You can do a simple search for genders, the only way to tell the gender of this type of bird is by doing a blood test. the only real difference is that females tend to hiss and be a bit more temperamental.

  2. The males generally have a greater vocal range, which is why more males "talk" than females in many species.  If your bird is vocalizing a lot now it bodes well that it is a male - however some females are rather vocal as youngsters too so it's no guarantee.  Only time will tell for sure but your bird obviously is inclined to mimic you - so keep at it!  Cockatiels are a lot of fun and learn some pretty amusing tunes, phrases (and noises :-)

  3. check out the website www.cockatielcottage.com and you should be able to find out quite a few answers there and good luck .

  4. These birds are very intelligent, and catch on to phrases, songs, and swear words very quickly. They are like little toddlers, they always need to be entertained, or may become bored very quickly.

These kind of birds make great company.

Wait to find out what s*x it is.

    Hope this helps

  5. It probably is a he, usually the boys pick up on whistling, talking etc. I have one too, it is a male and he was born in January of this year and has already picked up on whistling and a few other things. I thought the same thing was it normal for them to mimic so quickly but yours is too so it must be.lol

  6. The only certain way you know the gender of the cockatiel is by the cheeks.  If the orange spot is really really bright then it's a boy.  If they aren't so bright it's a girl.

    I hope this helped!

Also, it is normal for them to catch on so quickly because cockatiels are one of the smartest birds.

  7. im am sure its a boy because they sing a lot . i think you should  try whistiling to him the same song every day and he will copy you

  8. not nesssary what color are the cheeks on the bird bright orange or dark orange.
