You need at least the following:

A good anti-virus package.  Don't just go for one that's free and has an impressive-sounding name.  It could be malware itself.

A good anti-adware package.  I use Ad-Aware 2008.  It's free and has a very good reputation.

A good anti-spyware package.  Again, I use Spybot S&D.

A good firewall.  ZoneAlarm has a free one.

I recommend Norton antivirus as a starter for virus protection because its free for 30 days and scans your pc for free.

if you want a free one get avast! antivirus or avira or something.

if you will pay i highly suggest charter high speed security suite.
