Question:

New couch legs?

by  |  earlier

The legs I previously had on my couch either split (cheap wood) or the hole for the screws is completely stripped.

They used to just be a wooden cylinder with a s***w on the end that went into a hole in wooden frame of the couch. Right now the couch is sitting on unsightly cinder blocks.

How can I get new legs and securely attach them to the couch? Will I need to create new s***w holes?

  1. Maybe you can get a piece of oak board 1X4 and cut 4'' sections off and place it over the old area,(glue & s***w) and it depends on how your new legs attach if they are lag bolts then pre-drill a few sizes smaller, if it is a bolt thread then use an insert nut s***w on the new bolt/leg. easy fix but a little trouble, either way it is money well spent.

  2. Most legs are attached in one of two ways (assuming they are removable, and most are):

    1) Screws through holes in the bottom of the legs and into the sofa frame.  Usually 3-4 screws per leg.

    2) Hanger bolts in the leg, s******g into T-nuts in the frame.  When you s***w the leg on everything tightens up and holds in place (see the diagram in the link http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=... ).   The T-nuts may have fallen out.  Take off the dust cover and either go looking for them or buy some new ones at the hardware store.  5/16" is the usual USA standard for legs.

I can buy new legs in a variety of sizes and styles at woodworking suppliers or upholstery suppliers.  The ones I buy come with 5/16" hanger bolts already in place.

  3. You can find replacement legs at the hardware store , usually the hole are universal so you wont need to drill new ones .
