New deal with better price tag on cards for Detroit Red Wings forward, Todd Bertuzzi-NHL News
Good news is waiting Detroit Red Wings’ forward, Todd Bertuzzi, in form of an extension into his deal with the team, which now appears to be a very much possibility in the wake of recent positive talks around the issue from the management.
Bertuzzi is on a two-year contract with Wings and the player is expected to be granted an extension into it by as soon as Thursday, February 23, 2012.
Local media reports have revealed the ongoing negotiations between the player’s agent, Pat Morris, and the team management.
Morris also confirmed it and indicated a likelihood of a renewed contract for Bertuzzi.
He said:
"We're working at it, and getting closer."
Playing his third season with Wings, Bertuzzi will become an unrestricted free agent after the National Hockey League (NHL) trade deadline of February 27, 2012, if a new contract is not offered.
It is pertinent to mention that this is Bertuzzi’s second stint with the Detroit Red Wings. He had played for them in 2006-07 season, in which he appeared in only eight games.
He again joined the team in 2009-10 season on a two-year deal and is likely to stay longer this time.
The worth of the new deal is tipped to be over two million dollars, somewhere around the exact figure of $2.2 million, which is much higher than his current deal value of $1,937,500 a year.
Bertuzzi has played 54 games in total this season and his performance record is stretched over to 12 goals, 17 assists and the rating of plus-21.
He has scored as many as 48 goals and 74 assists in the 225 games he played during his both stints at Wings.
Interestingly, the team management has not responded to the reports suggesting the possibility of the new deal with a better price tag. The media reports have also not taken a shot on the team’s financial take in the talks.
Moreover, the player’s agent has also not spilled the beans and is maintaining silence over the possibility of a pay raise, which, if acquired, will be a considerable achievement
One key factor that can help the player fetch a better financial deal is his consistency in health and fitness. During his past three seasons, he missed only eight games for multiple reasons.
Amid the growing likelihood of reaching a deal on his contract, there is hardly any chance for the player to become a free agent and play for another team on the NHL.
