behind the old oven is the box its hard wired into, this leads to a main cooker swtich on the wall above it, its possible to turn this off at the fuse box though i would probably like to turn off all the electrics completetly and another socket to which the gas hob on top gets its ignition, im tempted to try and use this to plug the new oven into if i can get the old hard wired one out, or do you think this would be dangerous because i wouldnt have anyway of turning the electric off for the cooker unless by the main sockets switch in fuse box, or is it ok to leave the electric on when oven isnt in use anyway? the old one could obviously be switched off at wall because the wires lead there.

  1. Ovens usually take up to 30 amps and are hardwired into a box with a big paddle switch. They use very heavy twin and earth cable.  If you're not 100% sure, don't touch it. I'd do it - the worst that could happen is that  I get vapourised and the house (and a few others) burn down.

13A doesnt sound right for any oven, it cant be 3kW surely?

I could understand if it was a gas oven with electric features like fan, light, timer.

  2. Get an electrician and a gas technician to remove it.

  3. It is now illegal to do any electrical work in the U.K. unless you are properly qualified.

You should get a qualified fitter in to deal with it, or your insurance won't be worth squat.

  4. If your old oven is also a sngle one, then it is wired dangerously.A single oven only pulls around 9 or 10 amps and should be protected by a 13 amp fuse and NOT a 32 amp cooker circuit. The fuse is there to protect you and the appliance in the event of a fault,so a 32 amp would not blow until either you or the cooker melted. Now,,how to fix it....Turn off your electrical supply and remove the front off the cooker outlet, remove cables and connectors an simply replace with a double plug socket. This will serve your oven and your hob ignition, which shoul have a 3 amp plug on it.IF in doubt get a sparky in its a relatively simple job and should be cheap.
