Really need help with this....going out of my mind. Husband just had a custom engine built, car started fine at first and ran about 20 mins. Second time trying to get it to start it wouldn't, got the computer to see if there was a code that it was putting out. Said that needed to replace computer, bought new computer, already flashed. Vehicle will start up then go completely dead and won't start after that. Check spark plugs and they are soaked with gas.. What is the problem?

  1. The vehicle in question is a 1996 Mustang Cobra.  They have 4.6 liter dual over-head cam engines.  This engine is extremely sophisticated and difficult to work on, but when you throw a high-tech fuel injection system into the mix, things get really tricky....and expensive.  The car is running too rich at idle, and maybe too rich altogether.  If you have had a new fuel pump installed, it may be pushing at the same rate the older one was installed, but since it has a higher capacity, it is pumping too much fuel into the cylinders.  Try asking the shop that had the motor built about the problem.  If that doesn't work, try a racing electronics specialist (yes, they do exist) or an ASE certified mechanic.

  2. It sounds like its a problem delivering spark to the spark plugs. Either that or which I seriously doubt (this used to happen more with carbureted engines), is its dumping too rich of a mixture, flooding the combustion chamber with fuel.

  3. When the plugs are soaked with gas it means no fire or firing at wrong time. Maybe it is only firing on the starting circuit & then dying on the run circuit

  4. when your husband changed the computer, did he use his prom in the new computer? tell him to disconnect the battery to remind the computer that there has been a change, so it can reset itself. when i put a computer in my 88 olds. i had to disconnect the battery first, before i put the computer in.
