Question:

New flat, setting up landline?

I've just moved into a new flat and am having problems setting up a landline phone. There's no dial tone (it's not a problem with the phone itself: it works ok with other lines) and I don't know the phone number or the previous supplier. BT claim another company leased the line off them, but won't tell me who, and other phone companies won't help me unless I know the number! Trying to avoid £125 reconnection BT charge and 12-month contract if at all possible...

  1. dunno if this helps but i managed to get a half price reconnection charge , i just told bt that i want a phone line but am having trouble being able to afford the 125 quid , make out as if your always on the phone and make loads of calls , it will be more lucrative for them to give you half price connection charge.

  2. I would suggest that the last tenant had the line disconnected when he/she moved out so they wouldn't have to pay for your calls.

Unless you arranged to take over the number from the previous tenant that is...in this case, call them from a phone box or your mobile and ask them what the number was and who it was with if not BT.

Otherwise... bad news... you need to ask for a new provision.

Have a look at BT's website as you may want broadband as well as calls. Or if you have broadband with someone else then they should give you calls too for "free". Shop around though!

You DON'T want a reconnection of the last tenant's number as this will mean you'll get all their calls from the people they didn't tell they were moving.
