I just was given a nice fly-rod from one of my friends who doesn't use it anymore. What is good advice for newbie's with flyrods? Ohh yeah, I do not fish for trout with it. I fish for bass and panfish with it. What are some fly's that would be good for these kind of fish.

  1. There's a Gentleman the goes by the profile name of AIRFLOW and he would probably have a good answer for ya'. Hold tight and see if he picks up on your question. Here is a link that he along with other Yahoo Answers avid Fly Fishin' Anglers patronize (believe he runs the sight) so ya' might just want ta' check it out. Be like gettin' "Two birds with one stone" ie., your post here and addin' one on the link I've provided ;)...

  2. streamers and buck tails for sub- surface. nymphs and grubs for bottom presentations. and poppers and dear hair frogs for surface these will cover the whole water column top to bottom.a small tip use a standard floating line. for surface if you must sink something add a small section of lead core line with a regular knot.than your leader material.

  3. Firstly for flies, well if your fishing for bass, you cant go wrong with poppers, chartreuse works very well, also flies such as the woolly bugger can work very well fished on an intermediate line, a great site to help you out when fly fishing is

Although its intended for trout it should help you out, with the basics of casting, a weight forward seven weight line would be your first line of choice when fishing with big poppers, going up to a 9wt line in heavy wind or larger patterns

Simple streamer type flies work very well,

The last thing i will say is forget tapered leader when fly fishing for bass, some will disagree with me, but add a braided loop to the end of your fly line then attach a tippet of 9lb fluorocarbon straight to it with a  loop to loop connection, airflo g3 tippet works very well.

  4. wet flys and poppers are good to catch these fish (poppers=bass) wet fly = panfish
