New found glory for Maritimer means different possibilities next year
The 2-year-old Sid C. Attard trained colt Maritimer was supposedly done for the season after his win in the Coronation Futurity Stakes at Woodbine on 6 November, 2011, at about 1 1/8 miles over synthetic surface.
With no more races expected from Maritimer, he was thought to be done for the season but sometimes circumstances alter cases, and just like that Maritimer was getting ready for another race immediately after the Coronation Futurity Stakes.
“At first we’d said we’d put him away, but he came back so good,” said Sid Attard, who trains Maritimer for owner/breeder Howard Walton. “You’ve got to run them when they’re good.”
That is exactly what Sid Attard did with Maritimer, and as a result Maritimer came up with the strongest performance of his career to win the $175,300 Display Stakes.
It was the change in course for Maritimer from his connections which would probably alter which races the 2-year-old colt will run as a 3-year-old.
The Canadian bred son of Stormy Atlantic, out of mare Highland Mood by Highland Ruckus, Maritimer’s will target races which he hadn’t thought of competing in before. The colt might come down to participate in the Triple Crown.
The top three races of America would be in Maritimer’s range but to bring some solidity to the plans that would certainly target race in 2012 which would ensure his inclusion in the Triple Crown.
There are races beyond the Triple Crown which would now be in their agenda or maybe Norseman Racing Stable set him for the big Canadian races nest year.
The 2-year-old Maritimer has gone on to make six starts this season with 3 wins, 2 second place finishes and one start off the money in the Grade 3 Summer Stakes at a mile at Woodbine on turf to winner Finale.
His first campaign yielded Maritimer a sum of $361,140 in the six starts he made. The colt will be headed to Florida because after his successful debut season Maritimer is the main candidate for the Sovereign Award.
His connections could send him to run in the Queen’s Plate in 2012 at Woodbine as well. The 2011 season for Maritimer has opened many possibilities, it is up to him and his connections to keep the good times rolling next year as well.
