Mmkay.

So these people were giving away a gerbil because they didn't have the time so we took her in.

Her names Pandora.

Uhh so my question is:

Is it normal for her to be kicking her shavings onto her food bowl? 'Cause like half of the shaving have been kicked over it by her....

She's 6 months old....is this normal behavior?

Sorry I've never had a gerbil before so I'm not sure...

Thanks!

  1. Yes, it is normal for rodents to bury their food, its instinct, don't worry.

  2. Hi,

I am a gerbil breeder.. and yes, it is certainly normal, almost all gerbils do it.  It also might take some out of the food bowl and bury it in another place in the cage.  You have nothing to worry about.  I'm glad you decided to take this gerbil into your home!

    Hope this helps!

  3. it may be.. i hear gerbils like to bury things..  she may be hiding it from "others"  did she hav any sisters or brothers?? she may think their stil there and is trying to keep it all away from them....she may also be making a nest.. you should do research on them and find things out. good luck!

  4. that is a completely natural behavior, do not be concerned. in the wild gerbils live in complex burrows, so she is just doing what gerbils to best (besides gnawing on everything!)

  5. that's such a cute gerbil name! but anyways, she's hiding her food. i wouldn't worry about it. my gerbil did the same but still continued to dig up the shavings and get the food when he was hungry. i just always uncovered the dish when i gave mine food and he'd eat some then push shavings over the bowl again. i think it might be a gerbil thing

  6. its really normle my gerbils always kick wood shavings into there food dish and outside of the cage so i put there cages in a cardboard box but they can still see outside of it :D

  7. Yes. It's normal for her to bury her food bowl. It's natural, and you don't have to worry about it. My gerbils do it all the time, and they always know where their food is.
