Question:

New girth that tightens from the middle???

I heard that there is a new type of girth that tightens from the middle (all-purpose/jumping girth). Instead of just having buckles with rollers on the ends, the center is adjustable so that it fits like 46" to 60" or something. Does anyone have one of these? Does it work well? Do you and the horse like it? Does anyone know where I can get one? I ride a lot of different horses--14.2 ponies to 17 hand horses...something like this would be my dream girth! Please help! Thanks!

  1. looks interesting... its something if I ever had to use would take some getting used to... It seems like it would break easier though.

  2. Thats interesting. I would definitely want to see one at a tack store before I bought one, but I like the concept.

Several previous posters seem to be confused as to how this works. It does not tighten in the middle - it goes on just like any other girth & tightens at the billets. Its made out of 2 overlapping pieces so that the length of it can be adjusted before its put on.  There are keepers to keep the extra length from flopping around.

I'm wondering how smooth the edge of the overlap would be. Also - can you imagine keeping it clean? The holes & buckle would always be full of mud/dirt/sweat! Unless there was a cover of some sort over it, I guess.

  3. Interesting - where does the extra go when you shorten it ?

It's a good name brand so I expect it's pretty decent and not likely to cause rubs - I'm just wondering how they do that.

  4. I do not know about you, but I am not going under a horses stomach to tighten a girth. and just where does the extra girth go when you have it on a small horse. No thank

  5. yeah, I'm with the previous answerer. Just curious - what good is it having it done up in the middle anyway?
