New grips golf?

I am getting new grips put on my irons and I am having the oversize lamkin dual density ones replacing the old stock grips. Are these good grips? Will these take a while to get used to and once I get used to them will they improve my game and in which ways?

  1. Hi,

The grips you mentioned are really good grips and like all new pieces of equipment it will take a little bit of time to get used to them.

I prefer to use oversized grips as well; they help me to get a better feeling of the shot. But what suits me might not suit you.

Good grips will definitely help you improve your game. However, I agree with Pflem; there is no substitute for practice.

  2. Good differs from player to player.  All you really need is a grip that feels good to you and helps you grip the club.

They won't really improve your game, other than letting you grip the club lighter, which makes the swing less tense and helps a little.

But new grips aren't going to dramitically lower your scores, only practice and lessons will do that.

But all in all, ya, they are good grips.  Pretty much anything by the big manufacturers like Lamkin or Golf Pride is a decent grip.

  3. An investment in good grips is a good investment indeed. Anything that will give you a better feel for the club will improve your game.

That being said, just investing in better equipment will not fix errors on the course. There is no substitute for practice.

  4. They are pretty good grips, but it all depends on the player.  Different players like different grips.

I prefer full cord, but I have gone to the dual density because my hands get sore from hitting to much balls with cord.

What I just started to do though is wear 2 gloves.  I know it looks kind of stupid, but it allows me to swing the club harder with less grip pressure.  Too much flex in your forearms will not allow the club to release properly.

Since using 2 gloves, I have noticed I hit the ball solid much more often.  Yesterday I measured one off at 315 with my sky caddie (a little downhill).

I got the idea from wearing rain gloves for the first time.  I hate wet grips, so I bought a pair of rain gloves and used them during a wet round.  Low and behold, I was hitting the ball better with the 2 rain gloves in the rain than I do with one glove in dry conditions.

Something to think about...I found that nobody teases you if your beating them.

  5. I've never used Lamkin dual density grips before so I don't know if they are good, average or bad.  I just wanted to talk about the size of the grip for a moment.  You say you're getting oversized grips.  Is the reason you're getting oversized grips because you have big hands?  Be careful when getting oversized grips.  The bigger the grips the harder it is to turn the club over.  Most people get oversized grips for two reasons; (1) they have big hands and need the oversized grips to make their hands fit properly on the golf club and (2) most golfers who have a severe hooking problem sometimes get oversized grips because it makes turning the club over more difficult thus eliminating the hook from their game.  Make sure you are choosing the oversized grips for the right reason.  The smaller/thinner the grip, the easier it is to turn the club over and draw or hook the ball.  I personally like a thinner grip b/c I can feel what the clubface is doing at the point of impact.  It also allows me to work the ball easier than a thick or oversized grip.
