Hi,

Building a new home. What cables would you run to handle present and future technology?? I was thinking minimum of phone and cable tv-anything else? Also is it bad to bury in the same trench as power?? I am burying the primary power to my transformer. If I use conduit and put in a foot or two soil between the prim power and the phone/cable would that be okay?

  1. you should also run some cat6 for internet and for future i would put in cat6a, because internet speeds are improving and cat6a can handle 10gbps of data.

  2. Put up a 4' x 4' plywood backboard in the basement.

Run all your low voltage/signal runs radially from it.

    One cable per outlet.

I'd run 'cat 6` with each phone line.

  3. Definitely run Cat-6 with the phone (or instead of the phone, just run double to any room that would require both phone and internet).

  4. your primary from the transformer should be a minimum of 48 inches deep. you can get by with your phone and cable being only 18-24 inches deep.

  5. Check the National Electric Code or your local building inspector before placing any thing close to the power lines.

As well as the phone and cable tv check with your local telephone company or building inspector about any plans for fiber optic cable and install an approved conduit for the fiber.
