  1. I am a NYS Licensed Insurance Agent,  I always ask people can you afford to buy a car if yours is totaled in an accident and you are at fault.  Why because, if you only have liability just medical and other people are paid if you have comp and collision (full Coverage) then your car will be covered so you can purchase a new one if it is totaled or paid to be repaired!

  2. If you buy a car and there is a lienholder, you need to carry full coverage which includes Collision and Comprehensive coverage.  Collision pays for the damage to your vehicle regardless of fault, and in most states the deductible applies.  If you are not at fault, your company will subrogate to recover what is paid out including your deductible.  Comprehensive coverage applies to theft, fire, flood, vandalism, glass breakage etc.  The deductible always applies.

Liability coverage is required in most states(NH and WI are the exception).  You should consider buying higher limits, not just the compulsory limits.  For example, in MA the compulsory limits are $20,000 per person/$40,000 per accident/$5000 property damage.  These limits are inadequate, especially the PD limit.  Consider increasing your limits to at least 100/300/100.  Increase your deductibles to offset the rate increase for higher liability limits.

Make sure you carry adequate Uninsured Motorist coverage.

  3. Full cover means they'll fix your car, liability means they will not but they'll charge you less.

Up to you to decide which one is the best.
