Question:

New job, moving to another state. Decisions. Can you please help my husband and I?

So, this may be a bit lengthy but please take the time to read this and help my husband and I make a very important decision.

I've been offered a job position.. in order to accept this position, my husband, two children and I would have to move to another state. We have a very nice home in California, currently. The new job would pay A LOT more than my current job -- which does pay a lot as well. My husband's job allows him to work from anywhere, so that would be no issue. My husband and I are currently both working from home to stay with our daughters (exactly 2 mos old as of today!) This new job would allow me to work from home 2 days a week. My husband however would still be able to work from home 5 days a week.

So, like I said this new job pays A LOT more. If we should choose to accept, the flight from home to Hawaii (where we would have to move) is only 5-6 hours and we plan on visiting our family a lot. We will fly home for all holidays and special occasions.

The company offering me a position has offered me a sum of $10thousand dollars for simply accepting the offer, should I choose to do so. And we've already saved up a LOT of money in the past years, and even without that we DO have the money to purchase a really nice house, and we would like to. We do want a larger family, and our current house has 4 bedrooms and although they are large, if we should choose to have more children (which we would like, depending on what the future holds) this will not work. We also just re-did a lot of the house and if we sell it, the realistate agent says our house has a lot of potentional to sell for a good amount of money.

I just spent over a thousand dollars on new fish and a large aquariam, however I will not be able to take them with me if we move, :'( but my friend Chloe would love to take them because she too has saltwater fish.

I know this is a lot, but we want to cover all the possibilities

What questions should we ask ourselves to make sure we make the right choice?

Please don't be rude :)

Thank you SO much! Sorry if there are any spelling or grammatical errors -- I rushed.

  1. Did I understand this question correctly, are you moving from the mainland to Hawaii, or vice verso.  You might be making more money but from what I've been told the cost of living in hawaii is outrageous.  Is it really going to be worth it.

  2. It sounds like an awesome opportunity to live in one of the most beautiful places on earth.  Just be aware that your big increase would be eaten away a bit by the high cost of everything on the islands.  Everything has to be flown in so it is probably more expensive to live there than where you live now.

Have you visited Hawaii?  Are you familiar with it?  Can you talk to some of the people who work in the office you're considering moving to?

Of course you know that no one here can really answer this question for you - just give you ideas to consider.  Let me just wish you the best of luck, whatever you decide to do.

  3. Just ask yourself; Do you need the money that bad?  Is it worth risking what you have?

  4. flights from hawaii are about 700 bucks to/from CA  so everytime you go to CA thats 2100 bucks + any rental cars you have to rent.  HI has some expensive Real estate so hope you can sell your house for a good 500k+ to afford a "normal" looking house in HI.   Watch out for cockroaches there too.  They fly and are about 4 inches long.

  5. .    I lived in Hawaii for 5 years.  It is wonderful.  Go.

  6. Hi Lilly!

Just read your question & it sounds like an amazing oportunity! I think if you don't go for it then you will always wonder "what if?".

Also, keep in mind that although you will both miss your families (which would get easier with time), I'm pretty sure they will come & visit you as well as you going to them- I don't know many people who would turn down the chance of a holiday to Hawaii!!!

I would also consider how much better the quality of life could be for the little twins too if you are getting a much better pay. (I am not in any way saying it isnt great already, just pointing out what it could be!)

If things don't work out & you are both unhappy in Hawaii, would it really be that difficult to move back? At least you will have given it a shot!

Good luck with yr decision! Let us know what you decide x*x

  7. My mother and I used to live in Hawaii. The very FIRST question you need to ask yourself is: Is the cost of living HIGHER or LOWER in Hawaii compared to California? Water for example I hear is very expensive in Hawaii, ironic for an island but that's what I've heard. You need to see if the pay raise is enough when comparing the living costs. Gas prices, water prices, food prices, insurance prices, house prices. Hawaii CAN'T be cheaper to live in than California, it's an ISLAND, unless you're eating guavas off trees all day, everything is imported. Who cares if you're getting paid more when it COSTS more to live there? Hope this helps and I wish you a very happy life with your family wherever you decide to.

  8. It sounds pretty nice, but let me just give you a couple of things to consider:

    1.   I think a house in Hawaii is probably going to be significantly more expensive than even California.

    2.  The entire cost of living in Hawaii is likely to be much higher because everything has to be flown in.  What are the price of groceries, etc?  You should probably get 'out of the horses mouth' information from someone who lives there about this sort of thing.

    3.  You say that you are going to fly home for 'all holidays and special occasions'.   How much is airfare for four (or five or six if you have more children) going to cost you??  How often are you going to really want to make a five or six hour flight with two, three or more children?  As they get older, are they going to want to spend all their holidays away from their home?

Just some things to think about....

That said, I'd jump at the chance to go live somewhere like Hawaii, even if it were only for a couple of years.
