Question:

New job/relocation questions

Here's the deal: I'm an engineer whose worked for ~5 yrs in product development. I've decided to leave my current job (its going nowhere) and am starting to look for a new position. I currently am in the kansas city area, but want to relocate to a larger city (maybe Chicago or Boston), somewhere more fun I suppose. I'll have to sell my house, but am single, in my 20s, and have no other obligations.

Questions:

- How long will most employers allow for a relocation? I haven't gone full-bore into applying for jobs yet, but want to have an idea before I start.

- Also, should I do this now? I've only been in the house for ~1 yr and know the housing market sucks right now, but I've done the math and would still be OK financially.

  1. As far as how long an employer will give you to relocate depends on the employer there are no set rules. Also there are a lot of expenses in moving. You need to make sure you have enough saved for the costs and living expenses. Check to see if the employer pays any of the relocation costs.

Also places like Chicago and Boston are a lot more expensive to live so look up the living costs for the area you want to move too.

If you have only been in your house for one year and sell it you will be loosing money. Just so you know selling costs are a lot more than buying costs. Also average days on the market in Kansas City are pretty long and you may have to sell for less or the same as you paid for it.

I would suggest finding a better job in the same area for at least 2-3 more years. Then look outside of your job for fulfillment. Join some organizations, check out new hobbies, and try other activities. You may find your doing better and may not want to leave.
