Question:

New kitchen sink is deeper, how do I change the plumbing?

These are my questions:

1. In order to drain correctly how many inches below the sink does the horizontal pipe that leads into the wall have to be? I know there is a p-trap but I am referring to the piece that connects from the p-trap and fits into the pipe in the wall.

2. Since the pipe that leads into the wall right now will probably need to be lowered, I suppose that means I will have to tear into the cabinet and the wall.

On second thought, am I right to assume the pipe needs to be lowered or is there any such thing as configuring the pipes so that water will travel upward. I realize this defies the law of gravity but my washing machine empties into a tube in which the water has to go up about 3 feet.

So what are my options?

Thanks

  1. Tearing into the cabinet and the wall will be quite a job.  Here is what I suggest:  Install the strainer basket and down tube.  Then connect a p-trap as high as possible.  Hopefully the exhaust opening of the p-trap will be higher than the opening in the wall.  If not, you can either get a shallower sink or cut into the cabinet and the wall to lower the sanitary tee  inside the wall.  (Too much work.)

Comparing a sink to a wash machine is illogical.  A wash machine uses a pump to discharge the waste water, a sink uses gravity.

  2. water cannot "travel upward",you need to call a plumber and let them handle it.the waste pipe has to be angled properly or your sink wont drain at all, your washing machine is in your kitchen and drains into the same waste line as your sink????

  3. How much deeper is the new sink compared to the old one?

As long as the bottom of the drains in the sink are above the drain going into the wall and you can get the P-trap installed you shouldn't have any problems.

Only problem I can foresee is if you have a disposal on one side which will now have the outlet below the wall connection.  In that case, yes, you will have to put a lower wall connection in.

Can your existing tailpiece be cut down far enough to fit the P-trap?
