Question:

New kitten worries, what should I do?

Hi, I have just adopted a new kitten from an animal shelter. I got him home yesterday and he seems to be settling down a bit (now he has come out from all the hidey holes he seems to have found).

I am just concerned, he has only used the litter tray once during the night, doesn't appear to have eaten any of it's food even though it is the same food that it had at the shelter and it hasn't had anything to drink yet.

It is going to the vet today for it's first injections so it can get checked over as well. One of his eyes seems a bit sticky and he sounds a bit snotty. Is there anything I should be doing?

  1. that's good that you have an appointment for the vet for him today.  could be a little upper respiratory infection.  probably have to give him antibiotics for a week to 10 days.

to help him out till the appointment, you can take him in the shower with you and the steam from the shower will help open the nasal passageways.

  2. your gorgess new kitten is just settling in. All animals would be like this as its not what there used to :) dont worry x

  3. mention the snotty and sticky eye. That could be an infection and since you just brought him, I'd imagine they'd give meds to take care of it free of charge.

  4. thats sounds pretty normal

he may have a slight cold but other than that everything shud be fine

  5. You're taking him to the vet - that's exactly the right thing to do!  Most cats that are in a shelter manage to pick up some sort of cold.  Taking him into the bathroom while you're in the shower will help with any congestion.  For the first couple of days, too, it helps if you can confine them to one room (where you'll spend a lot of time of course!) with their food on one side, litter box on the other,  That helps them get their bearings, as the entire house can be a bit overwhelming for them.  It will take him a couple days to settle in, especially if he's coming down with a cold on top of all the changes.

Good luck with the little guy!

  6. my puppy was the same way.. your kitty is probably just scared ..give him time and trust me he will start eating in no time, and about your cats eye he might have a cold in his eye my cats got them alot during the winter.
