New land phone connections in the US?

Even with MagicJack, without an internet connection thru a server, and without a Cable Line or Land phone connection, how one can access the connection with laptop? For tourists to US is there no package for short-term landphone connections?

You can contact your local phone company (Verizon, ATT, Sprint, Frontier) and have them put in a line with no year long contract.

if you have a laptop just use any free wifi hotspot in the world!!

I did that last year in Europa...to call back to the US for free with my US area-code!!
