New light shed on Alfredo Simon shooting case
The world of Baseball world can surely hit a bumpy road at times. In any sport, there is the good, the bad and the ugly. For Alfredo Simon, it can turn out to be very ugly. The Baltimore Orioles relief pitcher is on the verge of
a murder conviction and then news comes from the Dominican Republic.
Nick Collias, of MLB Trade Rumours, has been looking into Spanish newspapers for the past few days and according to new details, Alfredo’s role in the shooting has been given a new light. Though much has not been heard of the events
transpiring in the other country, it is assumed that a public opinion will be made, once the reports have been confirmed.
Simon allegedly killed a 25-year-old, Michel Esteban Castillo on New Year’s Eve. The victim’s brother, Starlin Castillo Hernandez was also severely injured during the event. Alfredo shot both victims and that highlights the incident.
According to translations, Manuel Gilbert of Listin Diario writes, “Relatives of the Castillo brothers said that they were in the Luperón town park at four in the morning celebrating the New Year, when the player, without words,
fired several times at the group that was in the town square, killing Michel Esteban Castillo and gravely injuring Starlin Castillo Hernandez.”
Collias translated a report from Venezuelan paper El Universal, which read, “The player also wounded Starlin Castillo, younger brother of the deceased, when he allegedly shot into the air to celebrate New Year’s Eve, police said…
Locals said the player, who had recently signed a $4MM contract with the Baltimore Orioles, is known to have shot in the air on other occasions.”
Alfredo Simon has been part of the Baltimore Orioles squad for a long time. His 2 years of experience in the Major Leagues has made him a good player in the bullpen. Although, he lacks much heat in attack, the relief pitcher is,
nevertheless, a growing component in the squad. The 29-year-old player was weak last season. Even though there is potential in the pitcher’s throws, his Earning Runs Average fell to 4.93.
He saved 17 games in 49 game appearances and was effective against hitters in games occasionally. Unfortunately, he was weak for most part of the time. The O’s ace registered 37 strikeouts during the regular season and conceded
30 runs in 49.1 innings of pitching. Should the ball player face a probable murder sentence, it will be interesting to see what the O’s do.
