Question:

New litter of kittens, development?

To start off we got a female cat from someone who no longer wanted her. We were told she was spayed and had all her shots. She mainly stays inside but sometimes just wants to go out. We felt this was fine since she was fixed and vaccinated.

Well to our surprise one day she started to be getting bigger. And well she was pregnant. We did every thing need as far as getting her to the Vet, making sure she had the right foods, and anything need for the birth.

So Wednesday August 20th, she gave birth to two beautiful kittens. Both females. Mom is taking very good care of them. She is very comfortable with us handling them (as little as we do). Well now that they are here I would really like to learn more about their development. I want to make sure everything is going good.

Does anyone know any good sites that I can look at. I searched but couldn't find much that gave info on newborns.

  1. I thought this site gave a pretty good overview of what to expect. I've seen a lot of new litters thanks to our free roaming cats, but I can't remember exact times that the kittens opened their eyes and such. Hope this helps!

  2. Sounds like momma cat is taking good care of her babies.  You should take good care of momma, by supplying her with nutritious food and water and a safe place to be with her litter.  At about 5-6 weeks you can try to feed them some canned food or dry food softened with warm water.  They might even get into momma's food to try it out.  You might check out some of the info on Catster.com, as there are thousands of cat owners on that site or one of the Yahoo Groups could answer questions.  When the kits are about 6 weeks old you should probably take them to the vet to get them wormed and get their initial shots.  Try to find them good homes and then have your little unspayed momma fixed so that this doesn't happen again.  Good luck and hope this helps.
