could i use my new ontario drivers licence as a passport to cross into the united states or would i need other identification also?

If you are driving you can  use your drivers license but you will also need proof of citizenship such as a Canadian birth certificate.

The new licenses you are thinking of don't roll out for awhile, and then you have to pay for the option of using them like a passport.   The kind of drivers license that has the imbedded information is called the "enhanced driver's license".

Look for it in about 2010 or so.
