New owner Jimmy Haslam exercises patience with Cleveland Browns – NFL Feature
Cleveland Browns new owner Jimmy Haslam has wisely decided to let the ball rolling for the time he gets versed with the team affairs and understands the game little more than he has already done being a boasted diehard Pittsburgh Steelers' fan.
The new owner has said to remain calm and patient with what the Browns have been doing this season. Jimmy has admitted that the team’s poor record does not please him at all, and added that he understands this should not please coach Pat Shurmur and president
Mike Holmgren also.
He has been hearing and watching these officials closely as he had been seeing the team’s insignificant effort on the field, although he had an excuse for the managers to get away with the poor showing given the team are a rather young side. They have 15
rookie players on the roster, more than any other team in the league.
So, he has shown willingness to bear with the situation, for the time being at least. His plan of action is very much similar to of Jacksonville Jaguars’ owner Shahid Khan. He has not disturbed his side much at any position. So both of them are trying to
spend first year as their learning experiences, respectively, what next? They have not shown their cards so far. The story of the Jaguars is not much different to the Browns.
At the time Jimmy signed $1 billion deal with outgoing owner Randy Learner, he snubbed a question how a Steelers boasted fan will have loyalties for the Browns. In Steelers, Jimmy also held some minority rights. He said from then on he would be committed
to his franchise more than any other team in the league, no matter if he was a loyal supporter of any of them from the past.
With this much said, the new owner is clear in his intentions to work for the Browns. After all, he has committed one billion dollar investment. He definitely aims to reap the benefit out of it.
It is to be seen how he goes about the business in the future. So far he has not made any notable move that could reflect his intentions as far as changes are concerned, and more importantly as far as financial commitment is concerned.
His only move so far is the meeting with former Browns’ player and advisor Jim Brown, who has ended his protest with the team for being ousted by the outgoing owner.
Jimmy too confirmed a lengthy meeting with Jim at a dinner where spouses from both sides were a part of the discussion. It is hoped the planned role for Jim must be ready at the end of the season.
With Browns looking for a win after five weeks since start of the fresh season it appears the regular phase will be maximum they can go up to, and this should provide an opportunity to the new owner to start a possible rebuilding of the team earlier than
some other teams. Until then the Browns have to wait for a move by the owner as much as they did for a win this season.
