Question:

New paint caused the old paint to peel??

While painting a previously painted sheetrock ceiling the new latex paint seemed to soften and peel off the underlying 20yr. older paint. Is it possible no primer was used the first time it was painted or is something else going on? What can I do to prevent or cure this?

  1. I would dare say that there was no primer used on the sheetrock... however, is the ceiling "stippled" or "swirled"??  if that's the case, you're working with nothing but sheetrock mud, which will tend to soften and turn loose from the weight. To cure/prevent this you need to actually scape the ceiling of all the paint (or mud) and then prime and paint.  I wish there was an easy cure for this, but.... Good luck Granny

  2. THIS HAPPENS WHEN YOU PUT WATER BASED PAINT OVER OIL PAINT. HOWEVER, IN THIS CASE, 20 YEARS OF CURING. MOST LIKLEY THE UNDERPAINT WAS GLOSSIER THEN THE NEW PAINT AND NEEDS TO BE LIGHTLY SANDED TO GIVE IT A TOOTH FOR THE NEW PAINT TO ADHERE. IF IT IS ANYWHERE NEAR A COOKING AREA, IT MAY BE GREASE.IN WHICH CASE YOU NEED TO WASH IT WITH  (DENATURED)ALCOHOL TO GET ALL THE GREASE OFF. HOPE THIS HELPS YOU.
