Question:

New paint peeling off in the bathroom

I just re-painted my bathroom. The bathroom already had 2 older layers of paint and all I did was sand, applied primer and then finally applied the new paint. Unfortunately, I noticed that the new paint just peeled off effortlessly especially around the tub area.

Is this because of the 2 older paint layers? Is this because of bad primer/paint? Is this water damage on the wall beneath? I did not see any mold or anything.

Help.

  1. Paint needs a good cure and a solid contact. If you applied latex paint over oil paint without first using something like KillZ, the paint will peel off. Also, if you shower too soon after painting, the paint might not have cured and would peel. A third choice is water damage, but that often shows up will bubbled paint.

  2. it is because of the steam you have no ventilation.you need some kind of a fan in your bathroom i don't know if you have one but it should be turned on when taking a shower.the paint should of stuck unless you used a cheap primer.

  3. You used the wrong type of primer. There are primers specifically for high moisture areas. Go to a quality Paint store such as ICI Delux or Sherwin Williams, explain your problem and they will fix you up with the appropriate primer. They will also sell you a compatible paint.
