New pet Cockatiel???

I recently got a Cockatiel he is around 6-7months old. We have not seen him eating or drinking anything and he isn't standing on a perch just holding on to the side of the cage or going to the bottom. I know they say since their new he may act like this but I'm just checking to make sure. Also any additional info about training them and taming, would be great. Thanks

  1. He's maybe still nervous about his new home.  Look in his food dish - do you see cracked open shells?  He may be eating and drinking when you're not around.  When we first rescued our cockatiel he had no clue what the perch was and just wanted to cling to the side of the cage for dear life!  He's probably fine, just keep watching him.

  2. no i dont think thy act like that cuz when i got new cockatailes they ate and dranked   he may be sick but keep feeding him cocaktail food dont wach them eat sometimes they dont like hat

  3. It all depends on their personality. Some are very trusting and will eat in your presence but others will become nervous. Since it's so young, I'd say it's just ajusting to you and it's new surounding. But it could still be on it's store feeding schedule. They tend to feed all the birds at night. If you want to see if it's really eating or not, you can feel under it's belly and if you feel a bone sticking way out then I'd suggest you take it to the vet. Also, it's best to start getting them used to you from the very beginning. To start, maybe reach in and give it's cheek a scratch or the back of it's neck. They seem to enjoy that. keep working with it and it will eventually come to love you.

  4. Buy some books about cockatiel. Try giving the bird fruits and veges
