  1. The best advice I can share is to by a book from the pet shop about parakeets. That is the best place for information that I know of. I can't fanthom spending a lot of money on a bird and then not even purchase a book on that bird.

  2. if you got her from a breeder as a baby, you must let her get used to her new home and environment. after she becomes calmer in her new home, take her out to fly around the house. be sure to spend lots of time with her and make sure to touch and hold her so that if she needs to go to the vet, she will be used to being handled. I had a parakeet from when she was a baby and she loved to be sung to. she would fall asleep on my finger and her feet would get hot. =] make sure to give your parakeet a lot of toys and switch them out with others to give her a variety.

If the parakeet is bought from a store where it is not very sociable, all you can do is take it very slowly. some get acustumed to being handled but others dont.

buy sandpaper grips for one of her perches to trim down her nails. also make sure to clip her wings so that in case she gets out, it will be easier to catch her.

    hoped this helped

  3. 1) take it out at the start and play with it right away.  This helps bonding.  There is no reason to wait.

    2)  the bird can be trained right away to sit on the finger, shoulder and head.  This helps them socialize.  Take the bird away from the cage to train it.

    3) have fun!

  4. That first poster is way off. It is very stressful for a bird to come to a new house. The best way to bond with the bird is to leave it alone for the first day, and then slowly, day by day, get closer to the cage. Try doing things near the cage so that she'll get used to the movement. If you rush to the cage and take her out right away, she will freak out and flop around (or fly into things if she has her wings untrimmed) and the stress of this causes their hearts to beat very fast and they can get very hurt.
