I have applied for a BT line, BT has to just reconnect as a line already existed to my house by previous tenants. But, I do not get any dial tone anywhere - not even in the master socket. Checked a few sites for help, tried everything, but there is no dial tone, not even noice when I connect a phone. tried with 2 brand new instruments as well, just to make sure there is no problem with the instruments. If I have to call BT engineer, they may charge exorbitantly.

  1. I had a problem similer to yours with bt just before christmas I rang BT and it turned out they had stopped the old line while they put a new line on for me this took about a week. If yours doesnt come back on in a week then I suggest you ring BT and inquire hope iv helped.

  2. BT will have 'switched on' your line but your dial tone will be going to another socket somewhere in your town, that is why when they test it, they say it is ok.

Don't panic ! This is quite a common problem. As you have stated, you have checked and your phones etc are ok, so ring BT back up and state this and that your line is still not working. They will quote about charges etc, don't worry about that, you've done your bit !

  3. we put the phone line into our daughters flat at xmas and the engineer called my mobile to see all was well. when i tried to call out on the landline there was no dial tone. the engineer came over and it turned out that the socket was faulty.

  4. BT are not exactly quick at reconnecting a line, plus the fact that the previous tenants may not have used BT for their service.

If there is no dial tone in the master socket then the line from the exchange is not connected, all you can do is get back to BT and find out how long they expect it to take to get your service operating.

Once the line is working again BT will hit you for a contract and there will be a connection fee.

  5. I can only give you an answer from Australia, that might help you.If you plug a phone in and get no dial tone it might have been disconnected at the exchange. They don't even have to send a tech out to the exchange it is all done by computer.Just make sure you use 2 phones to check you have no dial tone as one phone could be faulty. Here it is called an intact service and there is a small fee as I said is done by computer. If a fault has came on the line since the old people moved out and you moved in here telecom would get the phone working if the had to send someone out all day for the small fee not an hourly rate

  6. check all your equipment try another phone in the socket i used to work for b.t faults so i no how stupid the engineer prices are if your really sure its not ur equipment the only thing you can do is submit for the engineer they will only charge u if it ends up being your equipment so check everything carefully bewfore ringing again

  7. If its a new line or just been reconnected they shouldn't charge you...if they haven't provided you with a working service!!

You can claim money back on your bill if you have the fault repoted as well!!

Pain in the neck but keep ringing and logging it!!
