Question:

New primer coat and paint peeling off the wall?

I need help to fix this.

I have primed and painted my room and when taking off blue tape I've noticed paint and primer peeling off.

I have no idea what kind of paint was there originally (probably flat) but when rubbing on the wall you get your hand dirty . like a residue, is that normal?

If i need to scrape it off, what's the best and fastest method.

thank you

  1. Could be oil based enamel or worse, if it is a very old house, a milk based paint. If the house is heated with an oil burner or if they used a kero burner for spot heat, you can end up with an oily surface on everything and a fine soot particularly if there was a kero burner. There are all sorts of primer washes that take the glaze off things like enamel or worse case there has been a fire in the house and there is some sort of an oily residue left. A professional cleaning service can take test swipes and tell you what has to be done.

I had a milk based paint on my doors in my Victorian. NO commercial paint remover takes it off effectively.

  2. one easy way to repair the peeled patches is to use a joint compound....lightly sand the area around the peeling then put on a skim coat let it cure, then sand is so that there are no edges.... prime it with a quality primer(2 coats) and use a good quality paint.....  make sure that if you're using painters tape to either remove it immediately or score the edges of the tape so that it will not peel again.....  I can sincerely recommend this process considering I had the almost the same problem  did the above process and voila..... Just finished my kitchen yesterday..... Good Luck....

  3. you left the tape on to long you should of took the tape of as soon as you finished priming the walls then out knew tape up before you painted and after you painted took the tape off right away.that would of stoped it from peeling.

  4. scrape, sand and clean walls with a neatrulizer soultion.paint thinner is an example.its about 40 bucks a gallon for the primer but worth it. its called DMT Bonding Primer Marine Grade.great stuff cover all your walls or area with problem to ensure constintent color.paint enjoy
