I took off the J-shaped trap and put a bucket under it. water started coming in from the pipe that comes in from the wall. this completely changes my theory that there was a clog in the wall. the water coming out smells like bleach and goes from brown to clear and back. then it stops and starts again. how can water be coming back from the wall if the only place it is draining into is the dishwasher?

  1. But the water from the dishwasher drains into this pipe, correct?    Then the blockage is a long ways down there.    Get a snake ( a long snake and stuff it into the wall to clear the pipe the whole length of the snake.  The blockage may be at a toilet connection or a sink connection or  something like that.  Everything has to go to the sewer.

  2. Is the water cold?  There could be a connection to the a/c condensate line. Even If this isn't the problem, it sounds like you have a stoppage in the sewer line.
