  1. Congrats on the new family  member!

Make sure you know what kind of food your puppy has been eating.  You will want to feed them the same to not upset his/her stomach.  You may want to find this out before you pick the dog up so you can buy some ahead of time.

Your puppy is going to want to explore your home so make sure you have puppy proofed your home - everything is off the floor, vacuum good - (puppies can find everything!), make sure there are no wires sticking out for the dog to get caught in or chew on.

I loved watching my dogs explore the house for the first time.  The things they find, the look on their cute face.  It's a lot of work the first few weeks but remember it is all worth it to have that new family member.

  2. aww what ind of puppy is it? i would suggest getting all your supplies in advance, a mistake i made was getting the puppy then not being able to leave him home alone when i went to petsmart to buy his collar, leash, treats, toys, and bed( i had to bring him, and since i had no leash or collar yet he had to sit in my cart lol) i wasn't expecting to bring him home that day, but i couldn't leave him at the breeders a!  getting a new puppy is so exciting! he will be scared at first, and he will probably cry a lot the first night. if you get him a big fluffy stuffed animal and put it in his crate to sleep with, it might comfort him. just make sure it has no buttons or anything the puppy can bite off and choke on. after a few days, he will get used to his new life with you. when one of my dogs was puppy, the first he went outside and saw his shadow he freaked out and started barking at it! it was soo cute and funny. and start socailizing him early with people and places, take him wherever he is allowed to go with you, but don't let him come into contact with other dogs until he's had all of his shots. and start potty training him right away.

  3. well i have some advice-

If you already have a dog, getting a puppy can be stressful for you...

it will take your dog about a week to get used to the puppy-

your puppy will probably be scared at first  on the way home... pet he/she to make them more comfortable with you-

once your home bathroom breaks are very important... you should take your puppy out about every hour or so.... and 15 minutes after you feed them they should go out to the bathroom-

your puppy might end up like my puppy... he was scared of the food bowl at first because he saw his reflection in the bowl... don't worry it is not a serious problem. well... this is all i know. i hope it helps!

  4. i got a shitzu for christmas and she just looked around but your puppy will need to get use to the surrounding and its best to get its injections done before going near other dogs

  5. my very first dog i can remember was a beagle i was about 13 and all i wanted to do was go and play with her all the time my mom made me go in to wash dishes and i cryed cause i wanted to play with my new puppy.. she had got off her chain and got hit sadly to say i cryed for days im the oldest out of five and i was the only one who was able to have a dog cause i always took care of them... make sure you take her as soon as you get it to the vet for shots and check up to see if shes healthy.. puppys get parvo very earily in there life and can and is very deadly disease get her shots now started asap... and good luck also find out how old she is so you can make arangements now to have her fixed so you wont have unwanted pups in the future..........

  6. make sure that you find out what food your puppy has been eating.. make sure you keep him on the same food for awhile, Check to make sure your puppy is up on all his shots and vet work.. shots, worming.. stuff like that and  make sure you have everything you need... bowls, food, toys, bed. collar, leash  you will need all this to even take care and train your puppy.

Enjoy them while they are young.. they grow up fast.

  7. At first when I released him from his crate in the kitchen I let him look around it.  When we tried to stroke him, he would back off, so after he looked around the house and the yard, he became fine with us stroking him, and just kind of accepted this was his home now!

Good luck with your puppy :)

  8. I have two dogs and they were both different. The first one cuddled and slept the whole way home, and was a little timid when we got there. He curled up close to the couch and wouldn't really go after his toys. The funniest thing was that he'd stay on the carpet and would be too scared of the hardwood floor. Since he was a puppy, he'd sleep most of the time, and play, and sleep ... but he adjusted quite well.

The other dog we have cried the whole way home from the breeders, like a high pitch cry. No matter how much we tried to cuddle her to get her to sleep, she wouldn't stop crying. Already having our boy, she adjusted quite well, having that friendship, but whenever we go to the breeders she knows exactly where we are!

A new puppy is fun ... it's exciting because it's new and you love it right away. It's rewarding because you teach your animal how to play (more specifically, how you want it to play) and you teach it where to use the bathroom.

Have fun! Puppies are lovely. :)

  9. At first, puppies are always scared. Let it explore the environment for a while and aproach it carefuly. Stroke it and talk calmly to it. Toys would be great for it, too as well as treats. It'll get used to the family quickly. Good luck! :] Getting a puppy is always exciting!

  10. When I first got Snickers, the ride home was, uhm, fun? He didn't bark or whine the whole time, he just curled up in my lap =] Granted, he threw up on my lap too (which he still gets carsick - threw up all over my new seatcovers on the way to the vet and back last month...) He wasn't really scared or timid at all when we first got him, and he took to my dad and I immediately. Granted, we kept him in much better condition than his previous owner had so I think he was relieved. Make sure you have food and stuff before you get it though. Depending on how relaxed the puppy is, you may be able to take it to Petsmart or something and let it pick its own toys on the first day =] Congrats!

PS - Snickers is a GSD/Husky mix, so he was pretty big. I know absolutely nothing about small dogs..

  11. OMG! it was awesome and CONGRATS! seeing ehr for the first time made me like tear because shes my first child and she was tiny! (8 lbsat 7 weeks)

i guess the ride home ( 2 hours) she whined for a little while and then she'd sleep. She wasnt very happy being with us until about after a week or two and she knew she was there to stay, plus I have other dogs that comforted her!

my advice is to start crate training ASAP! i didnt and I regret it so bad!

I didnt reinforce the crate and now my great dane/st bernard pup is 4 months today and she's all over the place including the bed with mjy and my bf! SHE WONT FIT THERE MUCH LONGER HAHA shes a giant breed,,

anything else you nee to know let me know =)
